English - Reading
At New Monument Primary, reading underpins our whole curriculum, which is steeped in the development of fluency and the use of high-quality vocabulary. Reading and books are integral to learning across our curriculum. We are committed to ensuring a strong start in reading in the Early Years, which continues to grow throughout the school. Our aim is for every child to leave our school as a strong, confident reader, who has a love of reading.
We are passionate about reading at New Monument.
Our environment guarantees pupils are surrounded by and exposed to quality texts and reading experiences which reflect creativity, variety and diversity, with the aim of inspiring reading at every stage. Our top priority is nurturing a passion for reading, and we take immense pride in fostering and instilling this value within and beyond the classroom.
Our Reading Spine demonstrates the wonderful selection of books that our children get to explore
At New Monument we teach early reading in the Early Years and Key Stage 1 through Read Write Inc Phonics which is a systematic and structured way of teaching children to read and is designed to ensure all children learn to read accurately and fluently.
Pupils at New Monument have access to a wide range of reading materials in our welcoming school library. Accelerated Reader allows Y2-Y6 children to take quizzes on books they have read to check their understanding.
